This campaign is being supported by a large number of publishing companies, authors and bookshops themselves. A lot of shops will be throwing bookshop parties on 14th September too so make sure you get involved!
“What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul.”
― Neil Gaiman
Some of my favourite memories revolve around books and bookshops. When I was little my dad would take me to the library every Saturday morning and I would stand for ages staring at the shelves and picking up the gorgeous books. I’d then spend about another half an hour deciding which books I wanted to borrow. I also have vivid memories of spending any money I had in Waterstones or in second hand bookshops because, to me, books were more important than anything else.
I can also remember on my 13th birthday my Nan wanted to buy me some clothes and I was in a strop and refused to let her buy me any clothes because all I wanted was to go into Waterstones and choose lots of books instead. She refused and I was gutted that someone could think clothes were more important than books!
Over the years I have walked into bookshops to buy a certain book, to look around or to just be near so many books. Is there anything nicer than the smell of a bookshop? The sight of pristine books sitting on shelves screaming ‘read me’; all the stories and worlds hidden behind the covers. Nothing quite beats a good bookshop.
So, we need to save our beloved shops. Amazon may be a quick, cheap and easy way to buy books but I certainly don’t want to see the high street book shops closed down because they can’t manage to keep up with the online market.
A new nationwide campaign has begun called Books Are My Bag which is aiming to get people shopping in their local bookshops again and showing them some love! Whether it be an independent book shop or a chain store, you can make a difference.
On September 14th all you have to do is go to your favourite bookshop and buy a book to show your support.

It is massively important that we keep our lovely bookshops on the high street so the next generations can experience the pure delight and excitement of walking into a bookshop for the first time. I would hate to see them all slowly disappear so we need to do all we can to make sure they stick around for years to come.
