Geek Girl - Holly Smale

I have been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. There was quite a buzz around it from the YA community so was intrigued to give it a read. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it is definitely a great book.
Harriet is a GEEK. She likes to watch documentaries, do her homework, discover fascinating facts about the world and wear her favourite Winnie The Pooh jumper. She only has one friend and is often laughed at because she is such a geek. All of that is about to turn upside down when she goes on a school trip to a clothes show and gets scouted by a modeling agency. Suddenly Harriet will turn from geek to chic and people will be stunned by the transformation.
I liked the message that this book carried. It basically said that you should be who you want to be and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Don’t worry if you don’t have loads of friends or if you get bullied because you are the better person and you’re just being you. If I had read this book when I was about 13 I would have adored it for sure, but being 20, it was a little too safe for my liking in terms of the content. However, it wasn’t intended for my age group, it was intended for 11+ girls who, in the modern world, are currently being told they need to look a certain way or act a certain way to get through life and I think it’s really important that books like these are written.
I thought the main character Harriet was easy to relate too, being a geek at school myself it brought back some memories! The style of writing is perfect for the desired age group and there is some great humour too.
I managed to get through this book in two sittings and took me less than two hours to read. It is a pretty quick and easy book to read so was a nice break from some of the longer books I have been reading recently.
If you have a young daughter then I would definitely recommend they read this book.
Being an adult, I can’t say I enjoyed it all that much but if I imagine what my 13 year old self would have said then I think she would have loved it. So, for that reason, I am going to give it:
