Having been asked to the review this book by the author I was a little apprehensive. There is nothing worse than feeling obliged to say nice things to people about their work. Fortunately I didn’t find myself in that predicament because Lucy Barker has written a gem of a little chick–lit story with ‘One way or another’.
The main character is Isla Morgan, a singer songwriter who seems to have a perfect life with rock star boyfriend Nate until his infidelity changes everything. Fast forward 9 months and Islas life couldn’t be more different. She is back home living with her parents, broke and unable to write anything resembling a tune. To get her out of the rut she is persuaded, by her manager and parents, to go on a road trip with her vicious tonged grandmother Nana Mac and a photographer named Bill, who will be documenting the trip for a possible magazine spread.
The ensuing journey is full of ups and downs and whilst it is a little obvious where the story is going to end up, I didn’t mind as I was really enjoying the process of getting there. The emerging relationship between Isla and Nana Mac is a perfect mixture of touching moments and witty one liners and I did ‘LOL’ a few times and shed a tear or two.
The ‘will they – wont they’ romance between Bill and Isla played out well and I found myself willing them to get together. I disliked Nate and his dreadful new girlfriend Ruby but that is part of the charm of the book – the readers are supposed to hate the bad guys and love the good guys and I certainly did!!
There is just the right mix of celebrity escapism, down to earth realism, romance and humour in this story and I would certainly recommend it to fans of chick-lit.
