For a while I’ve heard all about Pretty Little Liars or ‘PLL’ due to the TV adaptation of the novels. I tend to avoid watching overly hyped programmes and am still recovering after my Desperate Housewives binge earlier this year that led me to watch all eight series back to back in quick succession whilst lounging in bed. (I still believe this was one of the best uses of my time EVER.)
I’ve avoided watching the TV show but recently had a brainwave to read the books first and then watch the TV show. After all, I’m the worlds biggest hater of book adaptations. However, being on Twitter means the plot was quickly spoiled by everyone tweeting about the latest twist so I was pretty damn gutted that I already knew the outcome before I had even started reading. However, I am naively hoping that the books are different to the TV show and that there will be a totally different conclusion. (I can but hope.)
Anyway, enough of my rambling.
Pretty Little Liars is based around a group of five friends. Alison, Hanna, Aria, Emily and Spencer. These five girls are seriously close and share all their darkest secrets but one event is about to rock their group apart. Alison goes missing and no trace of her or her body can be found. As the years drag on without Alison, the group of friends drift apart and go their own separate ways. But something might be about to bring them all back together again in the strangest of ways…
Oh wow. This book was incredible. The characters, the plot, the writing, just everything about this book screamed ‘I’M FABULOUS’. Each chapter of the novel focuses on a different girl and her story which kept the pace of the book really nicely. After every chapter you wanted to keep reading on and on and on! The plot was really ingenious and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I loved how is crossed genres of a thriller, mystery and NA. The missing friend, the secrets kept, the girls trying to come to terms with growing up….I thought it was fantastic.
This is the first book in a series of books which always gets me excited, I love a series! I cannot wait to see how these characters grow and develop and what happens as more and more secrets are revealed. And, whilst I may know what is coming (if the TV spoilers are anything to go by), I am incredibly intrigued to see where it ends up!
A fast paced, thrilling read about a group of teenage girls who may just have a secret or two they want to keep to themselves…
