I absolutely devoured this book and it is definitely my favourite of all of Allie’s titles.
Flora Fielding is in San Francisco awaiting the arrival of her boyfriend. It’s her birthday and she cannot wait to spend the next few weeks relaxing with Barney. However, Barney is a bit of a bastard and decides to ring Flora up on her birthday to dump her and tell her he is not coming to San Fran. Rightly annoyed, Flora starts to work out what she is going to do in San Fran for the next few weeks and decides to visit her cousin Bella who lives not too far away. The two cousins meet and Bella introduces Flora to a whole host of interesting characters.
There’s Steve, her music producer boyfriend. Toby, a wonderfully gay but super moody guy. Lisa who, well, says things how they are and Bill the bar manager who has a little bit more than just a crush on Lisa. With Bella now integrated into the group and supporting her cousins Abba tribute band in the local haunt The Lizard she starts to enjoy her time in San Fran and begins to forget about the vile Barney. However, things don’t stay so happy for long. Why is Bella being secretive? And, why is Flora being stared at by a super hot guy with beautiful blue eyes? She’s only just come out of a relationship and the last thing she needs is another man complicating things….right?
I found myself laughing and crying throughout this book. There is the perfect concoction of love, drama and good friends within this novel and I enjoyed every single page. Whether I was laughing at one of the tribute band members (Simon Le Bon Bon) or getting angry at the nasty Barney, I kept wanting the book to go on forever! I didn’t want to leave the world of these characters.
Flora was an awesome protagonist. She was funny, complicated, caring and trying to deal with heartbreak all at the same time and I think anyone who reads this book will be able to relate to her in some way. My second favourite character was Toby. Even when he was in a mood after having to dress up as Bjorn from Abba, he still made me smile and I was urging him to find the confidence to make his own happy ending. And of course, Bella, Flora’s cousin was a right old character. She made such a great development over the book. She started off as quite stubborn and shy and ended up being someone who accepted help from others and was no longer shy about chasing her dreams.
I love Allie’s writing style, as always, and enjoy the way the words just seem to flow into each other seamlessly. There was the right amount of humour mixed with the right amount of drama and I challenge you to not enjoy this book!
Whether you’re relaxing on a tropical beach (I’m jealous of you) or sitting in the back garden, you will enjoy this book from the first page to the last!
