This is a haunting, devastating story that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I have no doubt I will re-read this book multiple times, I have absolutely fallen in love with this tale.
Let me set the scene:
A scorching summer in the late 80′s. Exams are quickly approaching and then a summer full of fun awaits teenager Serena. She is offered private tutoring by her history teacher to help her get the A she apparently deserves in her exam. Her teacher, Marcus, is a good looking, young man and Serena can’t help but find him attractive. So when Marcus starts to become more tactile with her, stroking her face and planting kisses on her cheeks, she is in no position to refuse. How can she when he is so lovely and gorgeous?
Poppy is a young girl too, who, like Serena, gets drawn in by Marcus’ charm. Both of them try and compete for his attention and soon they are in competition to be the one that Marcus loves the most. But soon things turn nasty. Why is Marcus being so forceful with them both? Why is he hurting them? But he loves them and is always sorry after he hits them so it’s OK.
Let’s bring ourselves into the present.
Serena is a mother to two young children and wife to Evan. Poppy has just been released from prison for murdering Marcus.
Poppy is adamant that she didn’t kill Marcus and is bitter that most of her life has been spent behind bars. She is determined to go on a hunt to find Serena and find out what really happened on that fateful night in the warm summer of The Ice Cream Girls.
When you read this book, you will understand the bittersweet title. The Ice Cream Girls is the name that is given to the girls when they both go on trial by the press and I just adored how innocent it sounded in juxtaposition to what was going on in these girls lives.
I absolutely adored this book. The plot had me angry, sad, happy, frustrated and every other emotion. It was so powerful and so moving and the characters were so fantastic.
Serena and Poppy both had so many layers to them and I was desperate to keep reading on to find out more about them and their past. Marcus was an absolute monster and I hated his character although when we first meet him, I fell in love with him just like Serena did.
I can’t really find the words to describe how much I loved this book and if you only read one more book in your life, make sure it is this book. It affected me in so many ways and I will always, always remember the story of Poppy and Serena and the summer that changed everything.
