Tasmina Perry is known for her thrilling reads; often set in lovely tropical locations with a murder or a little bit of a mystery, so it was surprising to find that this book strays completely away from that. Yet, this really impressed me and I was so blown away by the story.
The Proposal follows the journey of two very different women separated by years. The first is Amy, a young woman trying to fit in with her boyfriends family who are miles away from her comfort zone. They are rich, posh and hard to please and Amy is finding it hard to compete. But when she finds a Tiffany box she realises that David is about to propose to her and decides to make sure she’s on her best behaviour, but, after a disastrous dinner, David ends their relationship and Amy is left stranded. Georgia, on the other hand, is an elderly, lonely lady who once had a lustrous career in the publishing industry. She wants a travel companion for New York and when Amy stumbles across Georgia’s add, she contacts the eldery lady and soon they are both on their way to the Big Apple.
Over the course of the novel we discover Georgia’s reason for wanting to travel to New York at her age; we are transported back to the late 1950’s and witness Georgia’s late teens and the events that led up to her current way of living. We also follow Amy’s story and see her try to come to terms with losing the man she loved and trying to decide whether it is ever worth giving love another try.
The two women learn important lessons from each other on their journey and soon they are more than just travel companions.
Tasmina took a big leap in writing this kind of tale. So used am I to the kinds of thrillers she writes, it was a little hard in the very beginning to realise there weren’t going to be any murders that needed to be solved! However, it didn’t take long until I was completely and utterly immersed in this novel. It’s not hard to fall in love with the two leading ladies and after a while, you completely forget the age difference and instead, you feel like you’re reading the story about two best friends. Tasmina has written these characters with such love that it spills out of the pages and you find yourself in a little bubble completely and utterly hanging on every word.
Due to being catapulted back in time, I felt like I knew Georgia so well and although Amy was a constant presence her story wasn’t explored as much as Georgia's. However that didn’t matter to me because I was completely wrapped up in Georgia’s and just wanted to keep reading about her.
I really enjoyed seeing Tasmina write in a different way and I really hope we see more novels from her that use a similar narrative voice.
This is a warm tale that is perfect for the dark winter evenings; take a trip back in time and discover the magic of Tasmin Perry this winter.
