I am SO shocked by how this plot ended that I feel the need to go back and read the whole book again to try and see all the clues that would have been left along the way.
I WISH I could give you a detailed synopsis of this book but I am far too scared that I will ruin it and I certainly don’t want to end up doing that so here’s the blurb:
Claudia seems to have the perfect life.
She’s heavily pregnant with a much wanted baby, she has a loving husband, and a beautiful home.
And then Zoe steps into her life. Zoe has come to help Claudia when her baby arrives.
But there’s something about Zoe that Claudia doesn’t like. Or trust.
And when she finds Zoe in her bedroom, Claudia’s anxiety turns to real fear …
This book is a bit of a cross between Tania Carver’s The Surrogate and Araminta Hall’s Everything And Nothing. As I was reading I could draw parallels between both of these novels but I was so relieved when this book had a fresh and completely unexpected twist. I like to pride myself on being pretty good at second guessing the author and being able to predict where the story will end up and I normally manage it. The only person who’s books I can never guess right are Linwood Barclay which is why he is my favourite crime author as he just keeps you guessing right until the very last word. I felt like Samantha did exactly the same with this book; you thought you had worked it out, then BAM there’s another twist and everything you think is blown out of the water and you have to start putting it all back together again. The last sentence of this book is one of those chilling, horrifying sentences that makes you desperate to read more, but of course there is no more to read!
I loved Samantha’s writing style. This novel is told from three different characters viewpoints and it flowed seamlessly throughout most of the plot (until the ending) and I didn’t ever stop to think who was talking as it was so cleverly written that I instantly knew whose voice was being heard. I admit that I did get VERY into this book and on numerous occasions I had to pause and say FUCK (sorry, naughty word) because I was sooo engrossed in this plot! (I love books that make you swear like that)
I would 100% recommend this book, although if you are pregnant then I would suggest you steer clear of this book until you have given birth otherwise you may have nightmares and/or never be able to fall asleep again. (Just a warning.)
Samantha is an extremely talented voice in this genre and I am SO excited to see what will be next from her! I also am going to add her previous novels to my TBR pile.
