You Had Me At Hello - Mhairi McFarlane

When I first approached this book I thought it was going to be another contrived chick lit book where the plot would be predictable. I was quite pleasantly surprised and whilst it was slightly predictable, the journey that the characters go on to reach the final conclusion is one that continued to surprise me. After I had finished this book I had a rare feeling of sadness as I had to say goodbye to these characters I had so quickly fallen in love with. Each character that Mhairi creates is beautifully written about and you can’t help but go through the emotions that the characters in this book go through.
As the title suggests this book is a love story that begins when Rachel and Ben meet at university. We join them years later as they both lead their own separate lives with one married and one coming out of a difficult relationship. Suddenly they bump into each other again and start to rediscover the emotions that they once had for each other. However they both now have responsibilities and lives to lead that don’t involve each other.
The book is cleverly written with flashbacks to their time together at university and then returning to the present day which adds lovely layers to the plot.
I loved this book and literally couldn’t put it down. I was so desperate to find out what was going to happen to these two characters.
I will definitely be looking out for more of Mhairi’s books. Truly brilliant.
