I was really excited to be a part of the blog tour for Love & The Goddess by Mary Coen and am really thankful to her for sending me a lovely signed copy of her book to read.
Love & The Goddess is almost like three short stories in one; we follow Kate on her journey through a separation, a health scare and a healing holiday which result in a really eclectic and interesting tale. Kate and Trevor seem to be happily in love but when Trevor drops the bombshell of splitting up, Kate is flabbergasted. She doesn't know what to do with herself and after a few encouraging words from a friend, joins a dating website. Hilarious but disastrous dates ensue but when Kate suffers a health scare, everything gets thrown into perspective and she embarks on a totally different way of life.
Love & The Goddess was a really interesting read. At times it felt like there were a few different stories crossing over to form one and I must admit I got a little confused! However, Mary manages to bring in so many different elements and ideas to the table with this book that it would be foolish to suggest that it would be an 'easy' read and one you didn't have to focus too much on. I think that's where I went wrong! I was expecting something a little different and after the first 150 pages I was thrown into a completely different world to the one I thought the plot would end up in and it took a little while to realise that!
Kate was a really intriguing character that had a lot to deal with in a seemingly short space of time. The way she dealt with these obstacles and managed to come out of the other side as a stronger person was really impressive and I loved the way she developed over the course of the book. The other characters were a little harder to get to know, mainly because the plot was focused so strongly on Kate and her actions.
Mary's writing is spot on and I felt the way she described certain places and events was really tangible and I felt like I was there with Kate. I guess my only gripe about the writing was a few tiny grammar and punctuation errors that could have easily been avoided, but it didn't detract from the actual story.
If you are looking for a story along the same vein as Eat, Pray, Love then you are onto a winner with this book!
