This book really stuck a chord with me because I had just finished my first year at university and my long term relationship had ended because of the pressures of Uni so I found myself identifying with Alice SO much. At times it felt like I was reading my own story. If you are lucky enough, you will have had one summer in your late teens that is a summer you will never forget, I was lucky enough to have one of those and I still treasure the memories even though people have moved on and everything has changed.
Alice is about to spend the best summer of her life with Joe who she meets on holiday with her mum. Joe and Alice fall into step with each other and begin to make memories together, loving every second they are around each other. However, Alice is forever aware that she is soon going off to university and with Joe’s life going nowhere quickly, she is preparing herself for the inevitable split that will happen soon. Joe promises he will write and visit Alice when she is at university but over time, Alice hears nothing and begins to move on from the perfect summer she spent with Joe by her side. Eventually, Alice catches the attention of Lukas, a posh Cambridge boy, who sweeps her up into his crazy world.
Suddenly, Joe is back in Alice’s life in a way she never thought he would be and she can’t stop thinking about the summer they spent together. With her head in one place and her heart in another, can she claw back the perfect summer she once had or does she just have to accept that you can’t always have what you want?
As I mentioned previously, I loved the character of Alice and I really sympathised with her. I loved Joe and finding out about his past and Lukas was a great addition to the plot. Paige’s descriptions are always so vivid and if you have seen her website with the research photos she took for this book you will see where she got her inspiration and see how well she has described the surroundings for the characters.
